Routine Exams and Cleanings
Dental exams and professional cleanings are part of your preventative dental care. Cleanings are performed in-office by a licensed hygienist who works to remove excessive buildup from your teeth and check the health of your gums. The exam is performed with a general dentist at Langdon dental, who checks your teeth and mouth for any signs of decay, oral cancer and loose or missing restorations. It is important to have a cleaning and exam done every six months to keep your teeth, gums and mouth healthy.
Why you should have routine Exams & Cleanings
It is important that you have a dental exam and cleaning done every six months as part of your preventative care treatment. For children, it’s a good idea to get them in for their first appointment when you begin to notice their baby teeth coming up through the gums. The goal of preventative care is to prevent problems from starting in the first place and to spot issues early on before they’re allowed to get worse.
What to expect during an exam and cleaning
Our hygienist will start by taking x-rays of your teeth which will be used to spot problems that might be hiding below the surface. A dental exam and cleaning will consist of a through debriding of the teeth and gums to get rid of bacteria via a cavitron. A cavitron is an ultrasonic scaler that uses high frequency sounds to clean teeth. WE may also utilize a laser to help debrid and kill harmful pathogens that cause gum and bone infections.
During the exam the dentist will also check for the following:
- Oral cancer screening
- Worn down or fractured teeth
- Alignment of teeth
- Health of gums and tissue
- Airway screening
